Hard Disk Drive Operation:
When a computer boots from cold it needs to find an operating system such as Microsoft Windows to load into its dynamic memory. An Operating System will have been installed on a number of recording tracks on the computer hard disk drive platter surfaces. A powerful magnetic mechanism called an actuator and servo is initiated by the BIOS and moves read write heads over the platter surfaces, to "seek" and settle on the recording tracks that contain the operating system and data.
Clicking Hard Disk Drive.
The most frequent failure symptoms associated with hard drives submitted to Computer Science Labs forensic services are "Clicking Noises" and "Hard Disk Not Recognized in BIOS".
When the read write heads malfunction the actuator moves the heads across the platters, the servo controls fail and the head assembly returns violently to its backstop, causing a clicking sound. In these circumstances Computer Science Labs will undertake forensic processes and procedures to rebuild the failed hard drive and extract the evidence data.
Clean Air is Essential.
With an operational malfunction such as read write failure Computer Science Labs repair the hard disk and transfer the data to a forensic duplicate hard disk drive. The repair usually involves the replacement of the read write head mechanism for which a clean air environment is essential.
Evidence Hard Drive Rebuild and Recovery:

Hard Drive Platter Cleaning:
With badly contaminated hard disk drives we are able to clean the surfaces of the recording media and rebuild the hard disk to an operational state that will extract data from the recording areas.
Read Write Head Track Positioning:
With Head Crashes although we cannot recover directly from the damaged or scoured surface areas we are able to recover data recording patterns from the non affected areas. Reading from these areas is normally prohibited by the scanning algorithms used and set-up during manufacture. Here at Computer Science Labs we can manipulate these algorithms and retrieve data from the hard disk.

Data Recovery Solutions:
Our research and development teams have found new solutions which can fully recover data from drives that are particularly difficult to work with, for example hard disk drives with integrated acoustic spacers assemblies. These spacers make it extremely difficult to implement platter swaps whilst maintaining alignment to read write heads. Many drives that have suffered mechanical failures and needing a platter swap would be deemed unrecoverable using conventional methods and techniques.
