Faulty Western Digital Problems.

◾Electronic component failure.
◾Hard Drive Motor Failure
◾Read/Write head failure
◾Data corruption due to head crashes
◾Firmware Failure
◾Damage to connectors
◾Maverick update issues

Like most hard drives Western Digital hard drives are susceptible to traditional data loss situations such as human error, computer viruses, natural disasters, and software/programme corruption usually resulting in:

◾Ticking and clicking noises due to damaged read/write heads or corrupt firmware.
◾Blank screen as the hard disk is not recognised.

Clicking and Buzzing Hard Drives

All Hard Disks Drives have a recommended life span in terms of run hours and in regular use will eventually fail as a result of a mechanical failure. The most common component to fail in a hard disk drive is the read/write head assembly. For a variety of reasons the heads fail to fly over the surface of the platters on an air bearing and as a result will collide with the platters. The resulting collisions cause damage and failure of the read write head ceramic component. Consequentially this results in poor definition magnetic patterning. The outcome is a functional failure or an accumulation of bad or corrupt data sectors. Bad or corrupt sectors will cause the computer to hang or run unacceptably slowly as the applications attempt to correct the errors.

Hard Drive Misuse and Damage.

◾Mains Power Surge
◾Over voltage damage power cable misplaced.
◾Broken Pin or Pins/ Data Cable IDE SATA SCSI damage.
◾Contaminated platters typically drink spillage of flood damage.
◾Corruption of systems files FAT.
◾Recycle Bin emptied or files were deleted in error.
◾Virus attack.
◾incorrectly Formatted Hard drives.
◾Partitioning or boot-up sector problems.
◾Forgotten or lost password removal from Hard Disk.

Western Digital hard disk drives are of exceptional quality and performance and are no more prone to developing faults than any other manufacturer’s hard disk.

Datlabs problem solving expertise and facilities offer you the best chance of recovering data from any type and manufacture of failed hard disk drives or storage media.

Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostic

This is a Western Digital (WD) product and it should be used with WD drives – internal as well as external WD drives. WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic can perform drive identification, diagnostics, and repairs on a WD drive and is free software.

These two panels cover the following info: model number, serial number, storage capacity, SMART status, file system, total space, free space.

Highlight a physical drive, click a button, and you will get to see that drive’s SMART data. Highlight a physical drive, click a button, and you will be presented with a dialog that allows you to run several tests: quick test, extended test, write zeros. WD Maverick Issue:

On October 30th, 2013 Western Digital informed registered customers of affected products via E-mail regarding reports of Western Digital and other external HDD products experiencing data loss when updating to OS X Mavericks (10.9). Our investigation to date has found that for a small percentage of customers that have the WD Drive Manager, WD Raid Manager and/or WD SmartWare software applications installed on their Mac, there can be cases of a repartition and reformat of their Direct Attached Storage (DAS) devices without customer acknowledgement which can result in data loss.

WD has been tracking this issue closely through its WD Forum and Support hotline and the occurrence rate of this event has been very low. A specific set of conditions and timing sequences between the OS and the WD software utilities has to occur to cause this issue. If you have already upgraded to Mavericks and are experiencing difficulty in accessing your external hard drive, please do not save anything to the drive, disconnect the drive from your computer, and contact the Computer Science Labs help line.
